vine was my only friend and now it's gone: a wildly belated, excessively long post-mortem

i don't know, there are enough vine compilations out there but i figured i'd pollute the internet with yet another one. deep cuts, not so deep cuts, and some lil musical ditties thrown in there. captions, too. tell yer internet buds.

And "Introducing Warren Beatty"? Wow this is an old movie. A few years later Natalie and Warren were an item before they had a bad split.

Sempre in inglese. Mi chiedo il perché. Un film fatto nel 61 che io ero Ancora nel pensiero dei tempi. Non.lo capisco. Almeno posso dire che le musiche sono originali. Almeno quello. Notte.

Morris seemed to be an amiable gold digger. What's the big deal that he chose her for the money? She was flattered and excited by his attention because of his good looks and charm. They both had something valuable to offer and seemed to generally like each other. Doesn't this set up usually work with the unattractive, wealthy older man trading comfort and security for the woman's elegance and looks. Many fine marriages have started this way and grown into deep love. A little humor and wit between Morris and Catherine would have gone a long way in bringing honesty to their situation. That would have allowed room for real love and respect to develop. The tragedy was the father stealing her dignity and rubbing her nose in it. Very cruel and unnecessary. Why could he not see the wealth as a gift that improved her prospects? A little Jane Austen practicality was needed.

The rest of the film is fine except for the first after the train encounter scene whete Cary Grant becomes so frank with her that he starts commenting on her and starts to fiddle with her hair. An extremely rude behavior. No woman would allow even the most handsome person like Cary Grant in the real life to touch her hair in the very first love or romantic scene. Absolutely un-natural and very distasteful to watch that scene.

Clouzot was blacklisted for making this during the Occupation but how deeply subversive this film is. The country was rife with informers, snitches and Gestapo toadies and it is hard not to connect the atmosphere of the film with the times. Maurice Chevalier actually entertained German troops in Germany and was damned as a collaborator. The Nazis knew he had an entire Jewish family hidden in his Riviera villa and this was the price the Nazis demanded for their lives. The Jews he saved have so testified. I get tired of hearing what people think they would or would not do in such circumstances.

John Dillinger watched this film at the Biograph Theater in Chicago and was shot and killed just a few minutes after the movie ended. It wasn't just the last movie he ever saw, it was the last anything he saw.

I find it so hard to believe that Douglas Sirk, having made so many wonderful films such as this one, was never nominated for anything...and other directors, perhaps less talented than Sirk, were not only nominated for awards, some of them even won these awards

It was b/c his movies were seen as soapy rather than looking at the message beneath the melodramatic surface. It is only in later years that critics saw the genius.
